I liked this biography DVD. Chronicling the adventures of an eccentric, resilient and tight-knit family. A remarkable story of unconditional love. A young woman who, influenced by the joyfully wild nature of her deeply dysfunctional father, found the fiery determination to carve out a successful life on her own terms. She had a very terrible childhood. As an adult, she is a mess still.

Looked like a good move - Woody Harrelson is one of the best - could not get it to play on two different systems Think the library needs to sort this out -

Not as good as the book; they left out almost everything from the first half of the book, I guess because those things happened in the western states. (WV must have been the main attraction in the movie because it's the stereotypical image of poverty. Let's keep deluding the public that Phoenix, AZ is a city with nothing but glamor and prosperity and no urban blight.) It also didn't tell things in chronological order. The book wasn't perfect with that either, but the movie really kept jumping back and forth between past and present.
If you haven't read the book, this movie is a good drama. If you like the movie, read the book. It's even better.

Difficult to believe this is a true story, but it was. It's amazing that the children made it out with normal lives of their own. Woody H was great in this role. Jennifer Lawrence was originally cast to play the mother, but backed out.

Wonderful performance by Woody Harrelson. The think the role of the mother could have been better cast. I was surprised how well the book was transformed into the movie.

Emotional, deep, full circle as she understands, holds on to, discards, reflects sad, painful, happy memories of her Father and family childhood till she leaves for college. This family painfully poor and dysfunctional drew a few tears and hits home.

This movie is based on the original memoir by the same name, written by Jeannette Walls. Jeannette lived a turbulent life, growing up under the poverty line with a bipolar mother and an alcoholic father, who could never quite hold down a job. However, her father always had a creative mind to him and would think up amazing creations and inventions that would one day make the family rich. Although Jeannette loathed her father for putting her in the scenarios that she was in, she still loved him for his sober self. Although the movie fell short of expectations at times and missed a few major plot points, Woody Harrelson had an amazing performance as her father Rex, throughout the movie. I would rate this movie 3.5/5 stars and recommend it to those who are interested in real life drama and tragedy.

Lots of difference between the book and the movie. Harellson was perfect for the part..
Father was a drunken monster. Dept of Family services should have placed those kids in foster care and charged the parents with child abuse.

This hauntingly true story of Jeannette Walls and her migrating family has the ability to make the viewer, laugh, cry, and think about the condition of human life and family. Based on Walls' bestselling memoir, she manages to overcome her upbringing through a strong bond with her brother and sisters and stay loyal to her family - whether they want her help or not.

After watching the trailer I expected this to be a different story, but I believe this is another "Captain fantastic". I hated "Captain fantastic" and I hated this movie too, therefore I could not finish it. The parenting style was just against my taste, values and beliefs.
If your child tells you that is hungry and you answer: "do you want me to cook a meal that lasts one hour, or do you want me to finish a painting that lasts forever?" then there is something wrong with you and you should not have any child in custody. Well, your stupid painting will not last forever, cos can burn like your child did when attempting to cook something to eat.
Shocked and saddened that these parents did not end up in jail.
If you want to watch mentally sick parents, a homeless family, living in poverty escaping law, child neglect and from below comments I can read some alcoholism, then this is a movie for you.

You see the top of the flames where the yellow dissolves into the heat? That zone is known in physics as the boundary between turbulence and order. It's a place where no rules apply. Or at least they haven't figured 'em out yet. That's all life is, bunch of molecules bouncin' off each other at random. So there's no point in tryin' to find a reason or pattern for why you were born at a certain time and why you got bit by that fire. You just got a little too close to the chaos is all. You understand?

Rich city folks live in fancy apartments but their air's so polluted they can't even see the stars. We'd have to be out of our minds to trade places with any of them.

Yeah, your dad said he saw you pass by in a cab the other night. Acted like we weren't even there. You shouldn't be ashamed of us just 'cause we choose a different lifestyle than you.
-Being homeless in New York City does not count as a lifestyle choice.

Your mom and I did everything we could for you, okay? We looked after you, and it was a happy family!
-Bullshit! We did it! We took care of each other because you were too drunk to! It was your job to protect us, and you didn't even try!
That ain't true, okay?
-It is true. You got some kind of weird revisionist history goin' on.
You were a happy kid!
-Stop it, Dad. Stop talking.
And they were happy kids! And we looked after you!
-Stop talking! Talking is not trying! You talked my whole goddamn life!

They were homeless before that for three years before that, which was pretty much how they raised us. My dad is not developing a technology for bituminous coal but he could tell you anything you want to know about it. He is the smartest man I know. He is also a drunk.

I spent my whole life huntin' for those demons in the wild. And the entire time they were hidin' inside my own belly. Sad state to spend your life in, bein' afraid of your own self.

Never forget how beautiful you are, Mountain Goat. And smart... And creative and strong... You're so strong. No little girl should ever have to carry her daddy on her back. You ain't like me at all, Mountain Goat. You're not afraid.
-I am like you. And I'm glad.
We had some good times, didn't we? Never did build that Glass Castle.
-No.
But we had a good time plannin' it.

Quotes from “Special Features”:
“I had dreams last night about Welch, which I have not dreamt about in a long time,” she says. “But it was a very wise man who said, ‘Secrets are a little bit like vampires—they suck the life out of you. Once they’re exposed to light, they lose their power over you.’
