A richly authentic epic adventure of rough-hewn men and courageous women, set in the hard country of the American Southwest frontier.

Hard Country is a rare and extraordinary story of one family's struggle to settle and endure in the vast, untamed territory of New Mexico.

In the wake of the death of his wife as she gives birth to his son, and the killing of his brother on the West Texas plains, John Kerney is forced to give up his ranch, leave his son behind, and strike out in search of the murderous outlaws and a place where he can start over. He drifts south until he meets a man who offers him work trailing cattle to the New Mexico Territory and forever changes his life.

Spanning the years of 1875 to 1918, Hard Country is the Western reinvented and enlarged into a saga that above all celebrates the people and the land of the great Southwest.

Absolutely brilliant insight into the need to be really tough, adaptable and have the ability to defend what you have worked hard for. A trying place and time for the weak minded/hearted. Between Apache Indians and shysters a person had to be suspicious of all until they proved themselves trustworthy. McGarrity held my fascination and I had trouble putting the book down....!! I was happy to see this was one of a trilogy.

Outstanding........awesome......abso--freaking--lutely dynamic read/story. According to the author, this is the first of a trilogy of the Kerney family that will end with the intro to the main character of his Kevin Kerney series. It will make you laugh..smile...and definitely cry. Great story....highly recommend!!!

If you liked Zane Grey or Louis La'Amour generational western sagas, this is the book for you. Enjoyed it immensely. Looked like a very long book, but the characters and plot keep you engaged til the end. The New Mexico/Mexico border settlement history was new to me as well.

This is a terrific , very readable western. I enjoyed every minute of it because McGarrity brought the real west of the late 1800's and early 1900's to light. I'm going to start with his first book and go from there.

I highly recommend it

I haven't read a western in a long time but thought this was an enjoyable book. Good author.

If you're a fan of Michael McGarrity's character, New Mexico cop Kevin Kerney, then you can't miss this story about Kerney's ancestors. It's just as engrossing as one of the Kerney mysteries.

Mr. McGarrity told me in an email that this is the first in a trilogy about the Kerney family and early New Mexico. After the trilogy is completed, Mr. McGarrity will return to Kerney and what happened to him after Vietnam that made him decide to become a cop.
