The West once ruled more than half the world. The religion it exported, Christianity, is still followed by a third of mankind. Above all, the way people live, or aspire to live, are unmistakably an invention of the West. All over the world, more and more humans eat a Western diet, wear Western clothes and live in Western housing. Niall Ferguson explains how by juxtaposing, we can uncover the keys, the six killer applications, of Western ascendancy.

This was very enlightening. I had never heard of anyone really trying to understand what has happened in the last 500 years. May be it was a bit simplistic to use the concept of 'apps', but it was a way of dividing things up into ├ępisodes which made some sense as it is a lot of information for one single thrust. May be it did not provide all the answers as to why the Western countries as Canada, the USA, Britain, Germany and France have made so much progress in science or why these same nations have come to dominate world politics (until now?), but it certainly is better than not reflecting on the reality and not be willling to even attempt in the face of all the political correctness we see, especially here in Ottawa.

The series started off on a promising note, and then seemed to really stretch to find how it's theory fit actual world happenings. Trying to use "apps" to appeal to a younger audience, oversimplifies some of the complex things driving progress and makes them completely unbelievable as a result. Wasn't impressed with this series, especially by the end.
