Off the coast of Nova Scotia in 1952, fierce winds force a small boat into port. The boat's pilot, the eccentric Captain Charles Johnson, takes up residence at the small inn run by Jim and his mother. With each day, the captain's presence becomes more valuable to the family as they struggle to keep the inn open for business--and his background becomes more mysterious as Jim discovers how much he knows about the lives and battles of the old-time pirates.

Who is this man whose compelling stories bring to life in such detail the day-to-day experience of sailing on a pirate ship? And how can he possibly know so much about how it feels to grow up among the Vikings; about how Francis Drake and Queen Elizabeth plotted their victories; about the loves of Grace O'Malley, the pirate queen of Ireland?

This book was a special kind of book. It's the kind of book that casually pulls you in unawares. So subtly, that you don't realize you love it until you find yourself not able to put it down. This is one of those rare books. The kind that you can read over, and over, and you'll never get tired of it.

Not only is this an engrossing and mysterious story, but also raises great questions about right and wrong. I learned a lot about pirates!

BO-RING. Seriously, nothing happened except the old guy blowing up a poor dog (this alone should be enough to disinterest you in reading this book) and telling these boring stories that would be best told in history class. I give it one star for the pretty cover which, though I haven't read the whole book, does not seem to be related in any way with the contents. If you're looking for a book with lots of adventure, I recommend you leave this one on the library shelf and read some books actually worth your attention, for example Leviathan by Scott Westerfeld, or The lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien.
