This is a nice collection of chillers, "tales brief and sinister" as the subtitle claims. Each of the four authors contributes on themes such as love, tricks, and travel. I enjoyed them all, and am sure middle grade readers will as well.

A sample from one of them, "Wayward Sons and Windblown Daughters":

"We are beginning to suspect we are not real people. I often feel I am made of wind and bits of ash, and that I cannot stand upright or all my bones will snap. Harry thinks he might be made of wax. He told me the other night that when he was standing too close to the candle in Mistress Hannicky's study, he thought his skin was going runny. He thought it all might drip away."

Each section has a brief introduction from one of the authors, who call themselves curators and share hints of the supposed adventures they went on to obtain these "curiosities." Here's a bit of one:

"I have come ashore, only half dead, one-quarter alive, and one quarter something else (the nature of which I am not quite sure myself). I am writing to remind you of the little box in the fifth-story hallway containing a medallion, a blue eyeball, an old police tape, and a jackknife, as well as four sheets of folded paper. Open with greatest care, especially the papers."

The cabinet contains lots of inventive fun.

Really good book with stories that send chills down your back and others that leave you wondering all night if maybe these aren't just stories.

I picked up this book because I thought it would be a really gruesome and gory kind of book and it wasn't. It was more mystery than horror but I was still intrigued by it!
