A Vimy Veteran Remembers
DVD - 1987?
This production commemorates First World War battle of Vimy Ridge. On April 9, 1917, a corps of Canadian soldiers captured the strategic ridge in France from the Germans. This marked not only a significant Allied victory, but also the first time Canadians had fought as an independent force and not as part of the British Army. The Canadian Corps suffered 20,000 casualties - 5,000 of these would never return home. A Vimy Veteran Remembers features interviews with 90-year-old War Amps member Perce Lemmon, who fought at Vimy. He joins War Amps CEO Cliff Chadderton to describe what life was like as a young soldier fighting in the trenches. The use of extensive archival war footage makes his story come to life. The production also features another prominent member of The War Amps, Fred Tilston, a Second World War Victoria Cross winner. Tilston talks about the four Victoria Cross winners at Vimy - an indication of the gallantry of the Canadian soldiers.
