When a brutal blast of cold hits Cincinnati, the public library transforms from a safe haven for the homeless into a potential war zone. Those who have no place of retreat to evade the cold stage a sit-in in the library where they are tended by members of the library's staff. Soon the police arrive and a stand-off threatens to bring tragedy to the homeless individuals and those who care about their well-being. An eye-opening exploration of the basic values of humanity plays out as the cold rages outside.

Hail Emilio!

This really was a brilliant and moving film! Damn shame the major Hollywood Studios treat the subject matter as the proverbial "third rail". Even though this indie got no marketing, nor Oscar nods---you can bet you will enjoy this film. I appreciate seeing A list actors appearing in these important if not popular indies. And the recognition of the Public Libraries---" the last bastions of TRUE democracy..."----well, very well said.

I agree with some comments below that it did start slowly but as it went on, I really got into it and found myself cheering for the homeless, laughing a lot, and definitely not cheering for the cops! Also, 3 cheers for Public Libraries, what they do everyday for all of us that is often unnoticed along with continuing cutbacks from civic and provincial governments!

Fairly well done from an artistic angle, & the humour helps it move along.
Unfortunately it's also chock full of all the current PC clichés, even the "carbon footprint".
The ending was bit much.

In yesterdays Spec they mentioned there are 15,000 + homeless in Hamilton on the front page. It really is a problem when the temperature drops during the winter and they don't have a place for them. Last year our Government brought in 50,000. Syrian's. I think we need to help Canadians in Canada. We can not save the world.

I howled with laughter and had tears running down my cheeks. The story has a slow start, but hang in there until the end. It will be worth it.

An interesting look at homelessness, the homeless community, addictions, success stories. Emilio Esteves has put together a feel good movie about a homeless community, whose lives are centred around days spent in the library. When a member of the community dies overnight of exposure and another goes missing, the homeless stage a sit in at the library. A good slimy politician (Christain Slater), a police negotiator looking for his troubled son (Alex Baldwin), and the girl next door (Taylor Shilling). This is a feel good movie as well as a snap shot of our homeless communities that are mostly ignored. And what a good job libraries do of meeting some of the needs of our homeless.

Excellent idea of having a movie based in a Public Library like Central. And there are many parallels. Smelly people, mentally ill, noisy people, homeless people. The movie quickly derails when it gets involved in a ludicrous law suit suing for almost a million dollars. This movie had potential to portray the reality of Public Libraries in inner cities. But it just devolves into a ridiculous plot about a coup of the library. Dumb plot and dumber direction.

This movie is so accurate in regards to library life, what happens and the connections staff make with the patrons. I feel like this is an important film that everyone should watch, whether you go to libraries or don't, I especially feel like people who tend to misjudge people or who aren't very sympathetic toward people who are less fortunate than they are should really consider watching this movie and just maybe it'll open their eyes up to the world around them.

Great story by Estevez I wonder why this has not happened in Libraries across America.
