This is my favourite of the 4 Sherlock Holmes books by Donald Thomas that I have read. The stories were all gripping, the atmosphere and settings were wonderful, and the characters well portrayed. The title story gave an excellent explanation to the long unexplained mystery of "The Turn of the Screw", but leaving it open as to whether there actually were any ghosts!

Brilliantly written - capturing the spirit of Holmes and Watson beautifully. Dare I say it? - I enjoyed Donald Thomas' writing so much and had little floating thoughts that I preferred his more-rounded mystery-novel approach than some of Conan Doyle's stories (my apologies to ACD!).
