Such a well told story and expertly written to be accessible by older Div 1 or younger Div 2 students.

Good historical fiction novel. very fast paced and reads sort of like a thriller.

The author effectively pulled off showing the reader the faults of Communist Russia. By following a little boy who, at the beginning, has complete faith and devotion to Stalin and his beliefs, readers are able to emotionally connect with and see how his life is changed forever. The only thing that was troublesome was that the boy had everlasting hope that everything would work out in the end when, in reality, his situation and circumstance would have actually been much graver. The story did however show why Communism didn’t work well and how the politicians and everyday people following Communism manipulated it and caused others pain in order to further their own means.

This is a short story, but one packed with life and the nuances of human behavior under duress. That Sasha sees the world through the honest and unassuming eyes of a child makes this tale all the more compelling. A fantastic read for people of all ages.

This is a hard book for students to read about a difficult topic.

The whole story takes place over the course of 2 days; but, this small amount of time totally change Sasha's world! On the 2013-2014 William Allen White 3 -5 Grade List.

Should be in all the school libraries. YA and Adults might like, "One day in the life of Ivan Denisovich". Then for a little closer to home read, "It can't happen here".
